Brief Biography of Paul Fonoroff

A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Paul studied Chinese as an undergraduate at Brown University. After earning a Masters in Fine Arts in cinema at the University of Southern California, he obtained a grant to research Chinese cinema at Beijing University.

Since 1983, he has lived in Hong Kong, where he is the film critic for the South China Morning Post and host of hundreds of movie-related television programs in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English. His collection of Hong Kong film memorabilia is showcased in Silver Light, A Pictorial History of Hong Kong Cinema 1920-1970 (Joint Publishing Company, Hong Kong), and his film reviews are collected in At the Hong Kong Movies, 600 Reviews From 1988 Till the Handover (Film Biweekly Publishing House, Hong Kong). An advisor to the Hong Kong Film Archives, Paul is a member of the Hong Kong Film Critics Association, the Hong Kong Film Critics Society, and the Performing Artists Guild of Hong Kong.
